Appointments to ENZ and TEC Boards

The boards of Education New Zealand (ENZ) and the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) have welcomed new appointments.

Ziena Jalil, who has a wealth of experience in international relationship management in Asia in the education and trade sectors, has been appointed to the ENZ Board. Jalil became a trustee of the Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono in October 2021. She is an award-winning business and public sector leader, focused on deepening New Zealand’s engagement with the Asia Pacific, and improving outcomes for those with diverse cultures, abilities and experiences.

With nearly 20 years’ experience working in New Zealand and Asia, Ziena consults on strategy and stakeholder engagement, and is a keynote speaker and commentator on Asia business, nation branding, leadership, and diversity, equity and inclusion. She is a board member of Unitec, Manukau Institute of Technology, DNA Design and the Cancer Society Auckland Northland.

“Ziena will bring strong experience and expertise in education, international relations and marketing, which will complement the current ENZ Board well and support its work in the sector going forward,” Education Minister Chris Hipkins said.

Rachael Tuwhangai and Lyn Provost have both been reappointed to the ENZ Board.

“The Board will continue to benefit from Rachel’s digital education experience and Lyn’s expertise in risk, assurance and insights across the education system,” said Hipkins.

Vivien Sutherland Bridgwater has been reappointed to the TEC Board.

“Vivien is an innovative leader and brings a valuable Te Ao Māori perspective to the Board. She continues to support the mahi of TEC through her expertise across various sectors,” Hipkins said.

ENZ is New Zealand’s government agency for building international education. It promotes New Zealand as a study destination for international students and supports the delivery of education services offshore. Education New Zealand also administers scholarships to help New Zealanders study overseas.

International education enables New Zealanders to live and learn alongside people from other cultures – make new friends, learn other languages and discover new perspectives. It contributes to tourism, regional growth and long-term trade, investment and diplomacy. More information about ENZ can be found at: https://enz.govt.nz/

The Tertiary Education Commission leads the Government’s relationship with the tertiary education sector (including universities, Te Pūkenga, wānanga, private training establishments, industry training organisations and other providers of post-secondary education and training) and provides careers services from education through to employment. Information about TEC can be found at: https://www.tec.govt.nz/
