Circle of Security Classroom Approach

Strengthening Connections: Circle of Security Classroom Approach. First 2000 days.

As a kaiako, you know the profound impact a supportive and nurturing environment has on the growth and well-being of tamariki. The Circle of Security classroom approach (COSC) is designed to enhance your skills and foster meaningful relationships between kaiako, tamariki, and their whānau.

This 2-session condensed version of the 8-week programme equips kaiako with essential key insights and practical strategies to create secure and loving relationships between tamariki and their caregivers. Rooted in attachment theory, this relationship-based programme highlights the significance of emotional connections in a child’s development.

It is suitable for education and early-education professionals, as well as support and allied staff including:

RTLB’s, SENCOs, Occupational Therapists, Education Psychologists, Teachers and Learning Support staff, Barnardos, REAP & NZEI.

Anyone working with whānau with children will also benefit.

Join Nicky Cooper and the Circle of Security Classroom Approach to nurture stronger connections and create a more supportive and emotionally rich educational experience for tamariki.

This training will cover:

  • This condensed program provides teachers with key insights and strategies rooted in attachment theory to foster secure, loving relationships between children and their caregivers.
  • Teachers play a crucial role in supporting young children and caregivers during transitions, ensuring children feel connected and nurtured in early education settings, as emphasized by the COS Classroom Approach.
  • This program emphasises reflective learning to deepen understanding and improve support for children through thoughtful teaching practices.
  • Carefully crafted resources and videos enhance your ability to identify emotional cues and employ effective communication strategies, fostering sensitivity in meeting children’s needs and empowering caregivers to do likewise.
  • Engaging in the COS Classroom Approach fosters a shared language among participants, revealing the vital role relationships play in children’s security and well-being through everyday interactions with colleagues and families.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Deepen your understanding of attachment theory and its implications for emotional development.
  • Learn effective communication strategies to facilitate open dialogue between kaiako, tamariki, and whānau.

  • Enrich your teaching practice with invaluable skills and insights.

About the Presenter: Nicky Cooper

Nicky Cooper has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in infant/child/adolescent and parental health for a number of years.  She works in population health and as a nursing tutor in family/whanau health.  Last year she undertook a pilot project supporting ECE in Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough and delivered 80 sessions across the region.

Trained as a circle of security facilitator in 2017, Nicky is trained in both the parenting and classroom programs. Having facilitated numerous courses across the motu, Nicky decided to condense the 8-week Circle of Security Classroom program into a shorter version for professional development to support ECE teachers as attachment figures for our tamariki and whanau.
