Auckland Zoo has launched New Zealand’s first zoo-based online conservation learning platform – an easily accessible offering of interactive courses for all ages and abilities! This innovative platform provides teachers and students with a virtual experience that brings the wonders of the natural world directly into the classroom.
The programme of courses for the new platform have been created by the Zoo’s internationally renowned and passionate group of conservation educators, who also facilitate sessions at the Zoo. From primary to tertiary and even life-long learners – there is something for all age groups with new modules being developed!
Our online courses are also great pre and post resource to enhance and support onsite visits at Auckland Zoo and our education experiences. These modules are linked to the NZ curriculum and able to seamlessly integrate into lesson plans. However, these modules will still provide incredible knowledge if you aren’t able to make it to the Zoo as a class!
The platform is able to be used by students independently or by the teacher as a group activity in the classroom. Conservation Learning Online offers accessibility settings to cater for the diverse needs of students, these include settings for visual impairment, seizure and epilepsy, colour vision deficiency, ADHD and learning enhancements.
A wide range of free modules – from an ‘Introduction to Backyard Conservation’, ‘Awesome Aotearoa’ to ‘Protecting Global Diversity’ and ‘Intro to Zoo Careers’, are now available to all. For those looking for more, paid modules offer adult learners an opportunity to tap into the expert knowledge of the Zoo’s educators with interactive discussion forums and live webinars.
By connecting people with wildlife and nature at Auckland Zoo, in the classroom or at home, we are helping to build the next generation of conservationists that can build a future for wildlife.
